| Apes and humans belong to the Hominoidea family of mammals. Apes, like humans, are a species that do not have an external tail. Some of the other mammals that belong to the ape family are Orangutans, Chimpanzees and Gorillas.
Apes, like humans, have a particular pattern for survival which is more intellectual and planned. Until very recently humans were put into a separate category as it was assumed that they were considerably different to Apes. However, fossil evidence and genetic scrutiny shows that there is a lot more similarity between Apes and humans than was known earlier.
Most Apes are agile and can climb trees. They are omnivorous as they live on fruit and also some amount of meat which they either scavenge or hunt for. Apes are habitants of Asia and Africa. Unfortunately because of deforestation many of the apes are endangered species. Another aspect that is endangering the Apes is that they are hunted as bush meat.
Studies have been conducted in the natural habitats of the various Apes. These show very different social cultures amongst the apes; orangutans prefer solitude, gibbons have a single life partner, gorillas live in groups which are headed by a single male adult leader, chimpanzees and bonobos live in large groups and reveal promiscuous sexual habits. The food habits also differ. Some Apes are frugivores, gorillas are foliovores, while chimpanzees prefers to hunt for meat sometimes. |
